IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AGING AND DISABILITY SERVICES DIVISION
This program focuses on Myths vs Truth, 10 Warning Signs, How to Keep Your Brain Healthy (at any age), local resources, and how individuals can be a part of the Alzheimer's Association's efforts in this era of treatment. A second component to the presentation will be Dementia Conversations, which helps guide caregivers through difficult conversations about going to the doctor, when to stop driving, and making legal and financial plans. Lastly, Managing Money focuses on the cost of caregiving, how Alzheimer's Disease affects finances, the benefits of early planning, avoiding financial abuse and fraud, and identifying financial and legal needs.
Learning objectives include:
Connecting people with helpful resources.
Techniques for breaking the ice and holding difficult conversations.
The legal and financial documents that caregivers should put in place.
Preparing for useful discussions about financial decisions and planning.
Identifying steps to lower the chances of financial abuse and fraud.
How to create a backup plan in case the caregiver can no longer provide care
Presented by: Lani Karosich and Cathy Maupin
Lani Karosich will present Alzheimer's Awareness. Lani graduated from UNR with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Public Health. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Business and Public Health administration. Before her role with the Alzheimer’s Association, Lani was quite the jack of all trades. During and after college she was a full-time group fitness instructor where she still works on a part time basis. She worked for a local medical group in Reno as a Population Health Coordinator and aided in their expansion of two more offices. She also worked as a Practice Consultant for Prominence Health Plan. With her experience in connecting with people, understanding primary care and insurance, and ultimately promoting healthy habits, Lani is able to utilize these key attributes and expand in her role as Public Health Program Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Cathy Maupin will present Dementia Conversations and Managing Money. Cathy graduated from UNR with degrees in Elementary and Special Education and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education/Reading Specialty. She was not only a caregiver for 22 years for her mother who had Alzheimer’s/Vascular Dementia, but is also a longtime volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association as a Support Group Facilitator, Community Educator and Legislative Ambassador. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Nevada Public Policy Committee. She received the Governor’s Point of Light Award for the most outstanding volunteer in the state of Nevada and was named Nevada Advocate of the year in 2021.
