Ethics in Real-time Practice: How Motivational Interviewing Can Support Ethical Practice with Vulnerable and Older Adults for ADSD Staff: LIVE WEBINAR

24 Apr 2025

This is a private event by invite only.

This four hour workshop will include practice ethics, such as do no harm, beneficence, supporting client autonomy, and maintaining scope of practice and scope of competence. Part of this work will dovetail into managing our role as providers and navigating any dual relationships appropriately. We will examine specifically how motivational interviewing can support these key ethical pieces - supporting ethical practice in our everyday work.  The course includes an introduction to motivational interviewing for providers working with vulnerable adults and  adults 60+. The focus on MI will include critical practical skills such as having empathy (with a focus on beneficence) and skills for truly supporting client autonomy while still encouraging positive changes. We will examine how motivational interviewing in particular reduces harm, as it supports developing clients' discrepancy and/or offering choices rather than pushing confrontation. We will also discuss provider limitations in terms of our role and how to maintain our limits thoughtfully. This part of the process gram will further emphasize client autonomy, along with scope of practice and scope of competence and dual relationships. Examples and practices will be focused on working with vulnerable adults aged 18+ and individuals aged 60 and older as well as their family and other stakeholders - with consideration for the unique work with these populations. Case examples and concerns from participants will be welcome.
