This presentation explores the complex landscape of developmental disorders, neurodiversity, and the impact of ableism on individuals with autism and related disorders. We will examine how language, culture, and systemic structures shape perceptions of disability, emphasizing the importance of cultural reciprocity and inclusive practices. We will highlight differences in functioning, daily life experiences, and medical considerations across ages and severity levels. Additionally, we will address the prevalence of abuse toward Autistic individuals, the challenges of co-morbid diagnoses, and the impact of ableist medical practices. Through interactive case examples, participants will engage in a group activity regarding their role in serving vulnerable populations in various ways. By the end of this session, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of neurodiversity, practical strategies for supporting Autistic individuals, and tools to build a more inclusive, informed, and safer community.
