Disclaimer: This course provides a foundation of fundamental theory and best practice in peer recovery and support. The course workbook includes practical application exercises that will allow you to think deeply about the curriculum and practice the skills that are modeled throughout the course. However, it is not meant to be a substitute for supervised hands-on experience in the field of peer recovery and support services.
Addiction is a chronic but treatable medical condition. Often unintentionally, many people still talk about addiction in ways that are stigmatizing—meaning they use words that can portray someone with a substance use disorder (SUD) in a shameful or negative way and may prevent them from seeking treatment. Although some language that may be considered stigmatizing is commonly used within social communities of people who struggle with substance use disorder (SUD), clinicians can show leadership in how language can destigmatize the disease of addiction. CASAT Learning makes a concentrated effort to avoid the use of any stigmatizing language in our courses, however it is possible that this type of language may still be found within some of the external videos and resources linked within the curriculum.
