IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AGING AND DISABILITY SERVICES DIVISION

Join us for an engaging fall prevention program led by Dr. Lisa Taylor, a seasoned, certified fitness and nutrition educator with more than 13 years of experience promoting empowerment and senior well-being. Having worked extensively with older adults through her Extension research and local community education programs in Oklahoma and now in Nevada, Dr. Taylor will provide actionable steps for enhancing mobility in and outside the home and cost-effective, practical strategies that promote a safer and more active future.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understanding Fall Risk Factors

  • Participants should be able to identify common risk factors associated with falls in older adults, such as muscle weakness, balance issues, medication side effects, and environmental hazards.

2. Impacts of Nutrition and Hydration on Fall Prevention

  •  Participants should be familiar with the role of a balanced diet and hydration in maintaining muscle strength, bone health, and healthy bodily functions. These food-focused actions, along with regular exercise, will be understood as crucial for preventing falls.

3. Implementing Home Safety Measures

  • Participants should be able to list practical strategies and assistive technologies they could use in creating a safer home environment following the presentation of tips for proper lighting, removal of tripping hazards, and low-cost tools and modifications to enhance the safety of commonly used spaces like bathrooms and kitchens.

Presented by: Lisa K. Taylor Ph.D.

Dr. Lisa K. Taylor earned a Vocational Home Economics Education certification and two Bachelor of Science degrees from Colorado State University. Her career roles have included serving as an Executive Vice President of a non-profit women's organization, a state vocational STEM program coordinator, and a national nutrition curriculum writer and trainer for the Applied Biology/Chemistry Project. She is currently an Extension researcher and certified instructor of fitness and nutrition programs for older adults in Northern Nevada. Her recent fall prevention research encompassed 167 participants she taught in 2022 and 2023. In her former position as the Carson City and Storey County Extension Educator, Taylor managed Extension's Community Garden, which celebrated its 23rd year in 2023 and provided sustainable organic produce for at-risk families, local food banks and 35 local gardeners. In that role, she also taught nutrition, fall prevention, and healthy home environments courses while supervising four staff members responsible for 4-H, youth development, school nutrition education, and Hispanic outreach programs. Dr. Taylor provided training and conducted research in Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda with 23 entrepreneurs, including a gluten-free baker, a frozen yogurt retailer, a pork farm-to-table business owner, and a dairy farmer who sold milk to local creameries.
