Successful school crisis prevention and response involves a comprehensive approach that installs a continuum of behavioral health supports and services, including universal focus on positive school climate and social emotional learning, behavioral health literacy for teachers and students, crisis preparedness for all school personnel, a focus on educator and school staff well-being, and availability of on-site school behavioral health providers, including both school- and community-employed professionals. This three-part series is intended for school counselors and social workers in Nevada.
Part 1: Mitigating Weapons and Violence in Schools
By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to:
Identify four key facts about school gun violence.
Discuss effective school and community partnerships to reduce weapons and violence in schools.
Describe effective prevention policies to curb school violence.
Part 2: Positive Communication Strategies
By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to:
Discuss principles of crisis communication
Outline the four phases of crisis management cycle
Describe generational differences that contribute to misunderstanding in communication.
Part 3: Collaborative Approaches in Suicidal Communication
By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to:
Identify collaborative approaches to effectively engage individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Demonstrate effective conversational strategies to increase the likelihood of positive outcomes with individuals experiencing suicidal ideation.
Discuss self-care approaches to address practitioner stress when addressing suicide ideation.
