Dr. Koenig will review definitions of religion and spirituality, and then begin by examining the role that religion/spirituality (R/S) plays in coping with trauma and stress. He will then examine research on the relationship between R/S and depression, suicide, anxiety, substance use disorders, psychological well-being, hope, optimism, marital satisfaction, delinquency/criminal activity, and social support. He will then present a model to help to explain how R/S influences mental and social health across the lifespan. Dr. Koenig will then review R/S-integrated psychotherapeutic interventions for depression, anxiety, "moral injury", and PTSD, while providing information on how to access a wide range of psychotherapeutic resources (therapist manuals and patient workbooks) for accomplishing the latter.
Learning objectives:
Will understand definitions of and distinctions between religion and spirituality, and when to use these terms in research and clinical practice
Will learn about the latest research on R/S and mental, social, and behavioral health that justifies addressing R/S in clinical practice
Will learn how to take a mental health spiritual history
Will learn about different R/S-integrated therapies that can be utilized when treating religious patients who preferred this approach
Will learn about boundaries that should not be crossed when addressing R/S in clinical practice
