This recording will present an introductory overview of the evidence-based psychopharmacology used to treat Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). The presentation will focus on helping participants understand the different medications that are formally indicated to treat specific SUDs, how the medications work, their benefits and limitations, and their side effects. The presentation will also discuss the general concepts of treating comorbid psychiatric disorders from a general perspective of cooccurring treatment principles. As part of the overview of concepts of cooccurring treatment, the presentation will specifically cover misconceptions and misinformation about the treatment of ADHD in individuals with cooccurring disorders. The overarching aim of the presentation is to help mental health and substance use professionals better understand the medication treatment side of SUDs.

Joshua B. Fitzgerald, MD
Joshua B. Fitzgerald, MD is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med). He is a dual Board-Certified General Psychiatrist and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who is an alumnus of UNR Med having completed medical school, psychiatry residency, and child and adolescent fellowship all at UNR Med. Dr. Fitzgerald is the Medical Director SOAR Early Psychosis Clinic and Principal Investigator two grant funded programs providing interdisciplinary treatment protocols to different diagnostic domains within Early Severe Mental Illness with psychosis. He also has extensive experience in psychiatric education, curriculum development, program development. Dr. Fitzgerald serves as a hub team member on two Project ECHO Nevada clinics supporting diagnosis and treatment of early psychosis treatment programs.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Fitzgerald has experience in outpatient psychiatric treatment, Pediatric Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison treatment in Renown Children’s Hospital, and expertise in psychosis, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
