Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, participants will:

  • Identify key neurobiological and behavioral similarities between substance use disorders and gambling disorder, including reward pathway activation, tolerance, craving, and impaired control.

  • Differentiate major clinical and diagnostic differences between substance addictions and gambling disorder, including withdrawal presentation, medical complications, and detection patterns.

  • Compare evidence-based treatment approaches for substance use disorders and gambling disorder, including pharmacological and psychosocial interventions.

  • Apply knowledge of similarities and differences to improve assessment, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning in clinical practice.
