The DSM-5 placed gambling disorder in the same section as substance use disorders. Research supported many similarities between substance addictions and gambling disorder as a “behavioral addiction.” Yet, despite many similarities between these addictive disorders, there are significant differences that are important to understand for diagnostic, treatment, and support of treatment seeking populations. This presentation will highlight similarities and differences and their relevance for treatment.
By the end of this presentation, participants will:
Identify key neurobiological and behavioral similarities between substance use disorders and gambling disorder, including reward pathway activation, tolerance, craving, and impaired control.
Differentiate major clinical and diagnostic differences between substance addictions and gambling disorder, including withdrawal presentation, medical complications, and detection patterns.
Compare evidence-based treatment approaches for substance use disorders and gambling disorder, including pharmacological and psychosocial interventions.
Apply knowledge of similarities and differences to improve assessment, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning in clinical practice.
