Motivational Interviewing for Renown Community Care Staff - Feb 3: IN-PERSON CLASS

3 Feb 2026
Reno, NV

Private Event - Invitation Only (Password Required)

Description

MI introduction: This three hour course will present a brief introduction to motivational interviewing spirit and goals. We will explore the fundamental underlying humanistic principles of MI and how these connect with effective and ethical care. We will also identify what expressed and accurate empathy entails (the key MI intervention) within the context of a brief overview of OARS (open questions, affirmations, reflections, summaries)+information/advice. Participants will have a chance to practice empathy skills.

MI in practice: This three hour course we will  practice hearing three types of patient language - change talk, sustain talk, and discord. Prior knowledge of MI spirit and OARS+information and advice will be helpful as these concepts  will be interwoven with how a provider might then respond to a patient's language and changes in language in the immediate moment.  This course will emphasize listening skills to start to work with ambivalence as well as maintain an effective helping relationship. Participants will have time to practice listening for types of language. We will introduce techniques, specifically nuanced reflections, to respond to sustain talk and change talk. (we will focus on reflections, with less emphasis on other OARS+information advice skills) We will briefly discuss the first principle for working with discord, non-defensiveness.
