Description
This training module addresses the unique challenges associated with group facilitation in correctional settings for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Participants will explore evidence-based strategies to manage group dynamics, enhance engagement, and foster inclusivity. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of understanding mental health, cultural diversity, gender differences, and the impact of vicarious trauma on facilitators, while providing practical interventions to optimize treatment outcomes. Learning Objectives By the end of this presentation, participants will:
- Attendees will identify prevalent challenges in group dynamics within correctional SUD treatment environments and apply evidence-based approaches to effectively address conflict, resistance, and disruptive behaviors.
- Attendees will demonstrate techniques to foster group engagement and client commitment, including the establishment and reinforcement of structured group norms.
- Attendees will distinguish the manifestation of mental health symptoms in group contexts from behavioral resistance or criminogenic thinking patterns.
- Attendees will employ culturally responsive and inclusive facilitation strategies that address diversity in race, ethnicity, and cultural background within group treatment settings.
- Attendees will analyze gender-specific differences in group participation and implement gender-responsive strategies to enhance treatment outcomes for both men and women.
- Attendees will apply practical interventions to engage non-participatory group members and manage high-risk or disruptive individuals, ensuring the cohesion of the group is maintained.
- Attendees will evaluate the effects of vicarious trauma on facilitators and utilize evidence-informed strategies to promote professional well-being and mitigate burnout.
