Suicide and suicide attempts are a national public health crisis. In 2024, provisional data indicates that we may exceed 50,000 deaths by suicide. More than 1.5 million people attempt suicide per year. The state of Nevada has recognized the need for routine training for healthcare and social service professionals to address the needs of its residents. The aging and disabled populations are at an increased risk of suicide and suicide attempts. The training will discuss evidence-informed risk and protective factors, as well as the assessment and screening process for these high-risk populations.
After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:
Understanding Suicide
• Define basic terms related to suicidality and understanding of how language impacts this population.
• Be familiar with suicide-related statistics.
• Understand why a person may experience a suicidal crisis (bio-psych-social)
• Demonstrate an understanding of evidence-informed risk and protective factors.
Collecting Accurate Assessment Information
• Integrate a risk assessment for suicidality early in an intervention and continue to collect assessment information on an ongoing basis.
• Understand that poor or incomplete documentation makes it difficult to defend against legal challenges.
• Review of how to complete a risk assessment and how to adjust the process for specific populations
• Discuss referral and resources available to assist with distinct levels of suicide risk.
