This practical training is designed for community-based staff and partners who support victims and survivors of crime, including CHWs, peer support specialists, medical support staff, and other frontline helpers. Participants will learn how trauma and victimization can show up in everyday interactions, such as changes in engagement, emotional reactivity, shutdown, somatic complaints, missed appointments, and difficulty trusting systems. The session focuses on “what to do in the moment” skills that promote safety, dignity, and follow-through, especially when working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other underserved victim populations.
By the end of this presentation, participants will:
Recognize trauma-related signs and patterns common in community-based victim service settings (e.g., hypervigilance, shutdown, dissociation, somatic distress, high reactivity, avoidance) and connect these patterns to immediate support needs.
Demonstrate trauma-informed responses that increase safety and engagement in brief encounters, including choice-based language, predictable next steps, grounding strategies, and “do no harm” approaches to disclosure.
Use a basic ethical response framework that includes confidentiality limits, clear boundaries, and trauma-sensitive communication when situations may trigger mandated reporting for children or vulnerable adults, with an emphasis on preserving trust and coordinating next steps appropriately.
