The commercial adult/sex industry is a highly complex and layered business that consists of both legal and illicit dealings from street-level prostitution to brothel workers and high-end escorts. The population involved in this industry is difficult to quantify for many reasons. Stigmatized, marginalized, disenfranchised, and vulnerable, these individuals are often isolated and shrouded in secrecy as veiled people filled with shame due to the nature of the work and often underlying criminal element. Some, both knowingly and unknowingly, are “victims of sex trafficking yet victimized into the larger context of prostitution”. And still others seemingly are under their own free will. Studying and quantifying adult/sex workers remains elusive, including the percentage of those who work in the industry by choice. The University of Nevada, Reno – Extension conducted a needs assessment in 2020 to identify the priority needs and recommended service provisions for adult/sex workers as well as the unique needs and challenges these individuals and their families face. Coupled with stigmatization, these challenges create barriers to accessing basic resources and tools for living healthy, full lives for them and their families and make exiting prostitution a risky and sometimes dangerous endeavor. In this webinar, we will present the findings and share recommendations for local providers to address these needs.
