Description

This 2-day Renown Staff event will cover the following topics: 

  • MI – Foundational to care across all scopes of practice (most of day one)
  • Multidimensional Criteria for Level of Care Determination – Supporting a wholistic view of the client’s needs, as well as patient placement (part of day one and day two)
  • Trauma Informed Care – Can encourage a change of lens in how clients present (part of day two)
  • Harm Reduction – Information to consider for clients with ambivalence about change (part of day two)

Training Goals

  1. Equip staff with evidence-based approaches (Patient placement, MI, Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction) to effectively support individuals in acute psychiatric or substance use crisis.
  2. Build a shared interdisciplinary framework across APRNs, LCSWs, LPCCs, RNs, and Peer Support Specialists to foster consistency, safety, and compassion in patient care.
  3. Enhance staff confidence in turning crisis encounters into meaningful opportunities for stabilization, engagement, and long-term connection to services.
  4. Strengthen the unit’s capacity to reduce barriers, honor dignity, and promote recovery-oriented outcomes for every patient, regardless of presenting concern.

Learning Objectives by Topic

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

  • Demonstrate core MI skills (open questions, affirmations, reflections, summaries) in high-stress encounters.
  • Practice brief MI interventions suitable for 24-hour stabilization settings.
  • Use MI to plant seeds of change and connect patients to outpatient services with increased follow-through.

Multidimensional Criteria for Level of Care Determination

  • Supporting a wholistic view of the client’s needs, as well as patient placement.
  • Understand the ASAM dimensions and how they guide level-of-care decisions.
  • Integrate ASAM assessment into brief stabilization stays to support safe discharge planning.
  • Review ASAM criteria to support continued or transfers in level of care

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC)

  • Recognize signs of trauma and its impact at presentation
  • Apply TIC principles (safety, trust, collaboration, empowerment, choice) in crisis stabilization.
  • Adapt interventions to reduce retraumatization with the therapeutic process, as well as support the client as they leave the unit. 

Harm Reduction Approaches & Philosophy

  • Define harm reduction and its role in crisis and psychiatric urgent care.
  • Explore practical harm reduction strategies for intoxication, withdrawal, suicidality, and unstable housing.
  • Normalize harm reduction as a compassionate, pragmatic tool to reduce barriers and build long-term engagement.

  • Provide care that balances stabilization with hope, dignity, and a forward momentum. 
  • Respond consistently and collaboratively across disciplines. 
  • Turn each crisis encounter into an opportunity to reduce harm, build trust, and connect patients with ongoing support.
