This is not an introductory course!
This advanced grief course is designed for participants who already have foundational knowledge or training in grief support, and registration is intended for those with prior experience rather than beginners.
This interactive workshop provides students with a practical understanding of complicated bereavement and how it differs from normative grief. Participants will explore the clinical features that distinguish persistent grief from typical mourning processes, including risk factors, assessment, and cultural context. The session will also introduce structured assessment approaches to help clinicians identify complicated bereavement with confidence. Evidence-informed treatment strategies will be presented, with an emphasis on practical interventions that promote meaning-making and reengagement in life. Students will leave with greater clarity and increased confidence in working with individuals experiencing prolonged or complicated grief.
By the end of this presentation, participants will:
1. Differentiate between normative grief and complicated bereavement.
2. Identify risk factors, family background, and environmental situations that contribute to the development of complicated bereavement.
3. Demonstrate assessment strategies for complicated bereavement, including the use of structured questions and screening tools.
4. Apply a minimum of one evidence-informed treatment strategy to case examples involving clients experiencing complicated bereavement.
