This presentation will discuss how substance use disorder counselors can effectively integrate the topic of gambling and problem gambling into their work with SUD treatment clients. The presentation will begin with an overview of the literature linking gambling disorder and substance use disorders along with evidence that suggests that addressing gambling in SUD treatment improves client outcomes. The majority of the presentation will be spent on practical methods and tips on how to integrate gambling and problem gambling discussions into the SUD treatment process from assessment through discharge. The topics to be covered include screening and assessment, treatment planning, integrating the topic of gambling into therapy groups, and relapse prevention / continued wellness planning.
Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to understand links between substance use disorder and gambling disorder.
Participants will be able to develop treatment plans that address gambling related issues within SUD treatment.
Participants will be able to understand their role in delivering problem gambling integrated SUD treatment.
